The Beauty of (Not) Biking in Winter

Published by admin under General

Today’s guest post from Dave Steele provides an interesting perspective I have never considered.  What would you do if you couldn’t ride a bike?  I’m one “those crazy people.” You know, one of those people who has been known to show up to work on a bike when the air temp is well below zero with [...]

Hip Hop, Nairobi, Bicycles

Published by admin under General

Who would have guessed?  From Nairobi to Copenhagen to Tim K up in the Driftless Region to me in Milwaukee to you wherever you are. If the kids in Nairobi get it, perhaps there is a little hope for the future.  Check out  ‘Me and My Bike’ by Dickson Oyugi and crew, a award winning video from 1minutetosavetheword’s  [...]

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin officially announced the date and schedule for this years state bike summit.  Check this link for details at the Bike Fed website.  Unless another volcano blows it’s top, this year’s keynote speaker will be Andreas Rohl, the head of Copenhagen’s bicycle program!  I saw a presentation by Andreas in Washington, D.C. at [...]

Chicago’s bold new bike boss

Published by admin under General

Readers of Over the Bars know I like big ideas and big thinkers.  Anyone who knows me well can testify that I am fond of making personal pronouncements. Richard M. Daley, the previous mayor of Chicago, was a big thinker who was not afraid to speak out in favor of his convictions. Relative to bicycling, his oft-repeated [...]

Moving away from cars

Published by admin under General

A great video from the new Streetfilms series “Moving Beyond the Automobile.” Part two of a planned ten-part series, Streetfilms will take a look at sustainable transportation options and funding such as congestion pricing, bus rapid transit and car sharing.  Although this is really a bike blog, Streetfilms tend to be very well done, so I [...]

Elevator Statement

Published by admin under General

Jack Johnson catches Stanley Ketchel sleeping in 1909. The last snowfall hit Milwaukee like an upper cut from Jack Johnson.  Despite DPW’s best efforts, it seemed to come when we had our guard down during the night.  Salt trucks were seasoning the streets in my neighborhood well before the snow arrived, so it looked like [...]

Wonderful film

Published by admin under General

Thanks to Patrick for tipping me off to this beautifully shot and painfully honest short documentary.  I’ve been in the same situation as Jason Wood.  I cried then as I did watching Jason make the same decision I did. This video is not about bikes, but it has lots of bike content. Thank ou Jason Wood for allowing us this moment. Oden’s struggle [...]

Dutch Schwinn Upgrades

Published by admin under General

You can see the daytime LEDs below the main reflector. A couple weeks ago the wiring on my DLomotec LED headlight on my Dutch Schwinn broke.  The wires broke right next to the housing, and the light is built in such a way that it is not meant to be disassembled.  Rather than try to break [...]
